Every one of us will face death - either supporting someone we love through dying, or facing our own mortality. Death isn't something that only happens to other people; it's woven into all of our lives.
For thousands of years, humans knew how to care for their dying. Death happened at home, with families and neighbors who understood the process. But as society industrialized and people moved to cities, that knowledge migrated to hospitals and institutions. What was once common wisdom - how to sit with the dying, what to expect, how to provide comfort - became "professional" skills that regular people weren't supposed to have.
We gained medical advances but we lost ancestral understanding.
Death doulas help families return to that wisdom. They're reclaiming death as a natural process we can participate in, bridging the gap between medical care and human care. They're bringing back the knowledge our great-grandmothers carried and reminding us that caring for our dying is something we can and should do together.
You Can Be a Death Doula will teach you:
The full spectrum of death doula work - from legacy doulas to 11th hour doulas to emerging specializations
How death doulas work within the existing care system to support families without replacing medical professionals
A realistic understanding of dying including what changes to expect and how to support families through them
Your next steps whether you're exploring this as a career, supporting a loved one, or simply wanting to understand this growing field

Our Teaching / Learning / Creating Style at La Mort
We leave behind the polished, gate-keepy approach to education. We teach in ways that carry story and experience. We listen. We laugh (a lot). We go off-script sometimes. We cry (with you)(for those you’ve loved)(for those we’ve loved). We like science and studies and logical frameworks, but also mysticism and poetry and all that stuff. We really love to honor history and those who came before. We move through some serious curricula, but don’t take anything too seriously. We dedicate ourselves to seeing you, and want you to feel seen. We deeply honor our intuition and yours. We lead with integrity (always). And we welcome the odd-balls and misfits, because it takes one to know one.
